Relaxation response

Today I did Jon Kabat-Zinn‘s 20 minute sitting meditation. It focuses on following the breath and then having awareness of your body as a whole. It felt really nice. (I do it lying down.) I learned through the clinic and the book Managing Pain Before It Manages You how important it is to get my body to have a “relaxation response” each day, which calms the nervous system. The persistant annoyance, fear, frustration, etc of having almost constant pain contributes to stress and a nervous system that gets stuck in “fight flight freeze,” which only sensitizes us and increases pain. I like using a fuzzy warm blanket and also incense as an added sensory aid to calm down. Today I used lavender.
